Planning for the future…

Whitehall Farm Gardens is a family run, 5-acre retail plant nursery in Norristown, PA.

We opened our doors to the public on March 29, 2025, offering gardeners a wonderfully unique selection of naturalizing bulbs, native perennials, woody shrubs, and small flowering trees, as well as specimen hellebores and hostas. In our retail shop, we stock our favorite must-have garden tools and supplies.

The nursery will be the future home of Carolyn’s Shade Gardens as current owners Carolyn Walker and Michael Drennan transition operations to their son, Alex, and his wife, Marielle, over the next several seasons.

We are open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-4pm from mid-March through December. We are happy to place a special order for you if there is specific plant material you are interested in that we do not have in-stock. We also offer garden consultations starting at $250.00.

Kindly reach out directly via email with any questions!

Property History

Many visitors remark on our beautiful old barn and the corner farmhouse. Please enjoy this brief history of our special location at the corner of Whitehall and Bean Roads in Worcester Township:

This property on the southwest corner of Whitehall and Bean Roads is a part of the Isaac Norris purchase of 1704. On August 14, 1823, the land was sold to Samuel Frees, a sea captain who died that same year leaving a wife and seven children. On April 26, 1826, Charles Gouldey purchased the property from the eldest son of Samuel Frees.

Records indicate that the house and barn were erected prior to 1823. Additions to the original six room house were made in 1918 and 1958.

According to the 1850 census the Charles Gouldey family had five children. The second son, Charles T. Gouldey, was a tailor and used the rear room on the second floor as a tailor shop and fabrics storage area. Scars in the plaster show where his clothes peg boards were attached to the wall. Charles T. Gouldey took possession of the property on March 29, 1861, selling to Edward and Nattie Norman on January 29, 1904.

In 1910 this property was purchased by Richard B Lowry and Sarah, his wife, who made it their home until their deaths. Ruth Lowry, their daughter, has possession of the property and lives here at this time.

On January 19, 1983, S. Edgar David and R. Kimber David, purchased the property from the estate of Ruth Lowry. Edgar and Kim David operated David Brothers Landscape Services at the location, and Kim and his wife, as well as their daughter, lived in the house for a period of time.

On October 31, 2024, Alex and Marielle Drennan purchased the property from Edgar and Kim David. They have three businesses out of this property: Whitehall Farm Gardens, Practiced Hands Tree Care and Champion Tree & Plant Health Care. They live in the house with their 10-month-old son, Holt Drennan.

With the addition of two large hoop houses, Whitehall Farm Gardens will control plant production from start-to-finish. By cutting heavy chemicals and fertilizers, as well as using biodegradable pots and peat-free soil, we are taking a sustainable approach to our expansion.

Happy Plants, Happy Planet.

  • Organic, Peat-Free Soil

Your plants deserve the best, which is why we grow everything in Organic Mechanics soil. From Alfalfa Meal and Kelp Meal, Worm Castings (yum!) to Pine Bark, your plants will absolutely love where they grow!

  • Rain Water Collection

Did you know plants love rainwater best? With its added organic matter, plenty of nitrates, slight acidity and softness, rainwater is the preferred water source for plants. We collect 10,000 gallons of rainwater onsite to nourish our plants.

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Many active ingredients used in common insecticides and fungicides are toxic carcinogens. Throughout the growing process, we are committed to using organic and low-toxicity pesticides. We are pollinator friendly and will always say NO to Neonicotinoids.

  • Biodegradable Grow Pots

It’s time to say goodbye to black plastic plant pots once and for all! The plant material grown at Whitehall Farm Gardens comes in our signature pots made of rice hull fibers. We encourage you to reuse them, return them to us, or simply toss them in your compost pile!
